COMMENT:

Tottenham Hotspur host Premier League Champions Manchester United in Saturday's late afternoon match in the highly unusual position of being above the visitors in the League table. Spurs have generally had a very poor record against United during the Premier League Era (their last win was 3-1 at home on 19th May 2001) but recent matches between the two clubs have been fairly close-fought affairs and Harry Redknapp will be looking to extend Tottenham's excellent start to the season and build on their very fine home form.
Spurs are unbeaten at White Hart Lane in all competitions since 30th November 2008 - a run of 18 matches including the last 8 consecutive Premier League wins.

This will be the first match after the Summer 2009 player transfer window has closed and Spurs can look back on a very successful trading period which has seen four players join the club - Peter Crouch, Niko Kranjcar, Sebastien Bassong and Kyle Naughton - who will all probably see plenty of first team action this season. United have lost two very influential players in Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez and there are serious questions raised over their replacements. Despite already having already lost to newly-promoted Burnley, it would be foolish to write-off United's chances in the League and without any doubt they will still be in with a shout of the title next May.

TEAM NEWS:

Spurs received a very heavy blow with the news that Croatian playmaker Luka Modric had broken his leg in the match agaist Birmingham City and will be out for around six weeks. Injuries to Heurelho Gomes and Jermaine Jenas should have cleared-up by the time the United match comes around and Ledley King looks like he may be available after suffering a groin injury against Birmingham. This leaves Michael Dawson, Jonathan Woodgate and Gareth Bale still under treatment. Niko Kranjcar should make his Spurs debut against United.

There were no injuries reported for the Spurs players on international duty except for Cameroon's Sebastien Bassong who may also be a doubt for Saturday night.

Manchester United have confirmed that Rio Ferdinand could make his first appearance of the season against Tottenham on Saturday after recovering from a thigh injury.

Gary Neville, Fabio and Wes Brown have also been declared fit for the match but John O'Shea is a major doubt with a calf injury.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is weighing up a move for Russian goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev, 23, who currently plays for CSKA Moscow.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS:

Saturday evening's match will be the 175th meeting between Spurs and United. The two clubs met in last season's League (Carling) Cup Final which resulted in a 0-0 draw after extra time and United went on to win in a penalty shoot-out. The clubs also contested the 1967 FA Charity Shield which was shared after a 3-3 draw at Old Trafford and most memorable for a goal scored by Spurs goalkeeper Pat Jennings.
