Premier League Financial Winners & Losers

by Paul Yarden on 08/05/10

Who are the Premier League’s financial Winners & Losers?

The “Big Four” clubs were top of the Premier League income table with Arsenal having a turnover of £313.3 million, Manchester United £278.5 million, Chelsea £206.4 million and Liverpool £184.8 million. Total income for the 20 clubs for the year ending 31st December 2009 was over £1.9 billion with the average being just under £97 million per club.

Total debts of the 20 Premier League clubs reached £1,926.5 million in 2009. Manchester United owes the banks £716.5 million, Liverpool are in the red to the tune of £237 million, Arsenal is £206.6 million in debt and Fulham have a deficit of £203 million. The average debt is £96.33 million.

Wages represent a huge chunk of a club’s operating expenses and here again the “Big Four” clubs lead the table with Chelsea spending £149 million, Manchester United £123 million, Arsenal £104 million and Liverpool £90.4 million. Manchester City, Aston Villa and West Ham United all spent more on wages than Tottenham Hotspur’s £59.1 million and who finished the 2009-10 season in fourth place. The average spent on Wages in the Premier League was £58.9 million.

UEFA guidelines suggest that clubs should limit the ratio of wages to turnover at 70%. Half of the Premier League teams failed to do this.  On average, clubs spent a little under 61% of their turnover on wages.

No company can hope to operate at a loss for very long and still expect to be in business and football clubs are no exception. Portsmouth was forced into administration in the 2009-10 season and it probably won’t be too much longer before other clubs follow suit. Only six Premier League clubs reported profits in 2009 with Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur leading the table. Overall, Premier League clubs lost a total of £139 million and an average of around £7 million during 2009.
